The Screened Porch That Became My Favorite Place on Earth

There are places you visit, and then there are places that actually restore you. Magee’s Creek Retreat is the latter. The cabin is beautifully designed and full of personality, but what sets it apart is how naturally it belongs to its surroundings. It doesn’t feel imposed on the land — it feels like part of it. The beds are genuinely among the most comfortable I’ve slept in anywhere. The kitchen is better equipped than most of my friends’ homes. And throughout the space there’s a warmth and intention that makes it feel less like a rental and more like a home you’ve been lucky enough to drop into for a few days. You can feel that Amanda and Rob built this as their own escape first — as a place they genuinely love. That comes through in every detail. The property itself is where the magic lives. The paths through the woods, the two sandbars, the fire pit tucked under the trees — all of it is stunning and somehow still feels wild and unspoiled. On my last evening I watched a synchronous firefly display from a distance that I will not forget for a long time. If you’re visiting in May, look for them at dusk. It’s something else entirely. I came here needing stillness, with my giant Great Pyrenees Apollo in tow. What I found was the screened porch — which became my favorite place on earth for five days. I sat there for hours listening to the creek, the rain moving through the forest canopy, the birds. It was everything I needed and more. Apollo was, to put it plainly, in absolute heaven. For those of us who travel with large dogs, finding a place that is genuinely, thoughtfully welcoming to the beasts we love — not just tolerant of them — is rarer than it should be. Magee’s Creek is that place. This is a true gem within easy driving distance of New Orleans. It would be equally magical for families, a group of friends, or one exhausted person and her dog who just needed to remember how to breathe. Amanda and Rob — thank you. You built something really special here.

Gorgeous forest escape

Our family of five (boys ages 10 & 7, and a 2 year old little girl) spent two nights at the Fleetwood Cabin during the middle of the week in May. It was exactly what our family needed! The cabin is beautifully designed and has every amenity we could possibly need. Amanda & Rob have clearly put so much thought into every detail. We used their kayak and also brought a small kayak of our own. It began raining mid-afternoon during our full day there. The screened porch is absolutely magical during an afternoon thunderstorm. They have curated a selection of books that I really enjoyed reading and flipping through, as did our seven year old- especially the books on fairy houses. We are leaving relaxed and grateful for our time in the woods!

Five Stars

Joe’s review — ★5 Absolutely fantastic place!! House was beautiful and had everything we could have needed. And the creek and surrounding area is so pretty, peaceful, and quiet. Would recommend this for anyone looking for a place to get out of the city for a bit!
